In 2010, Arter was established as a dynamic force in Istanbul’s art scene, offering a platform for artists and audiences to engage with contemporary art.

The impressive 18,000 square meters that make up Arter’s building are home to exhibition galleries, performance halls, learning spaces, a library, an arts bookstore, and even a bistro.

💡Arter provides free shuttle services to enhance accessibility during its operating hours. The Taksim service, departing from Taksim metro station’s Gezi Park exit, offers regular trips starting at 10:30, with departures every 60 minutes starting at 11:30, while return trips from Arter to Taksim run at various times. The Tepebaşı service, originating in front of the Pera Museum, features convenient departures to and from Arter. An additional shuttle is available on Thursdays, and the last shuttle from Arter leaves after exhibitions or events. In the event of events beyond regular hours, an extra shuttle departs from Taksim metro station’s Gezi Park exit, departing 30 minutes before the event. For PiyalepaÅŸa service departing from Polat PiyalepaÅŸa Çarşı, scheduled times allow for easy access between PiyalepaÅŸa and Arter, with parking services available for a fee when presenting an Arter exhibition entrance ticket. Please note that shuttle times are approximate due to potential traffic and road conditions.

The Arter Collection: A Global Perspective on Contemporary Art

Arter’s outstanding collection of modern art is its central feature. The collection, which was launched internationally in 2007, is a prime example of Arter’s unwavering commitment to accepting fresh concepts and fashions in contemporary art.

With over 1,400 works by approximately 400 artists from around the world dating back to the 1960s until today, this extensive collection encompasses diverse media such as painting, sculpture, photography, film installation, sound and light performances, etc.

Rather than being confined to static archives, the collection serves as inspiration for curators and artists alike. Often, exhibitions draw exclusively or primarily from this collection while still showcasing works outside it. This approach ensures fresh perspectives are presented alongside established ones.

Arter’s Multifaceted Events Program

Arter’s Events Program showcases contemporary art across various disciplines, including performing arts, classical and electronic music, film, performance, and digital arts. These events held in Arter’s two performance halls, the Sevgi Gönül Auditorium and Karbon, push the boundaries of artistic expression.

What sets Arter apart is its ability to create connections between events, collections, and exhibitions. Collaborations with local and international artists result in innovative new works that enrich both the program itself and foster a sense of artistic community.

Arter’s Contribution to Art Discourse through Publications

In addition to its physical spaces and live events, Arter contributes to contemporary art discourse through its publications. With bilingual (Turkish and English) publications, it aims for global reach and seeks to contribute to the field of art history.

Arter’s publications encompass two new series: “Arter Close-Up,” which delves into individual works from its collection, and “Arter Background,” which provides insights into group exhibitions. Singular books focusing on specific exhibitions or featured artists further enhance conversations around contemporary art.

These publications not only encourage original research but also commission new texts that add to the knowledge production within contemporary art discourse. By actively engaging in these practices, artists play an integral role in shaping the ongoing narrative of art history.
